Intro
This article explains how to receive Bluetooth delivery to BlackBerry devices from Unicast Lite and Pro.
Problem Description
BlackBerry devices are manufactured by Rim. It seems that Rim decided to intentionally leave the OBEX service out when creating the operating system on BlackBerry devices. OBEX is the standard protocol used for sending files between Bluetooth devices; generally BlackBerry devices are limited services which allow pairing to hands free head sets, car kits and sharing their 3G/GPRS internet connection with PCs. However there is a BlackBerry application available that allows users to receive files.
Workaround
As of version 2.0.9.0 on wards pairing to BlackBerry devices is automatically handled by Unicast, to receive files the user merely has to follow these steps:
- Turn on Bluetooth discovery on the BlackBerry to make the device visible.
- Go to the media player application, hit the blackberry button and select "Receive via Bluetooth".
- Unicast will automatically try to pair with the BlackBerry and the user has to enter the PIN code in order to accept the pairing. We recommend using a PIN code of 0000 and perhaps setting your radio name to include the PIN, for example "Bob's Shop(PIN=0000)".
- Once paired the BlackBerry user should be offered the Unicast campaign file for download as for a normal phone.
Publicity
As part of BlueTooth advertising strategy we advise that you advertise the fact that you are broadcasting in the area using posters or some other means, this will not only encourage users to switch on their Bluetooth but you can include these instructions on the advertising to help BlackBerry users.
You could include the following text somewhere on your advert:
(BlackBerry users turn on Bluetooth discovery, the media player application, hit the blackberry button and select 'Receive via Bluetooth', enter PIN code '0000' when prompted)
